Treatments For Acne

Acne is a very common problem for teenagers but also for some adults.  It can be painful, distracting, and damaging to your self confidence when acne lesions are active and visible.  To help combat the problem of acne, science has put a great deal of time and effort into developing an effective acne treatment.

A wide range of acne treatments

Since we are all individuals and a little bit different from each other, it should come as no surprise that a little bit of trial and error may be required to find the acne treatment that works best for each individual.Fortunately, an ever increasing number of possible choices, now well into the hundreds, exist to help you with treating your acne problem.

Most acne treatments fall into one of these categories:

Mild cleanser – These products are normally readily available over the counter in your local drug store. The mild ingredients they contain will work to cleanse your face of dirt and bacteria, thus tackling a primary cause of acne problems.

Chemical – These products (also available over the counter) contain one of several different chemicals that are great for eliminating bacteria and reducing the occurrence of acne.Common examples are salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.

Prescription – An expanding range of prescription drugs are available to help treat acne.As these acne treatments work in different ways you can be sure that no matter how severe your own acne is, there will be a treatment that can help. These medicines are prescription only and are therefore, not available over the counter. To get these medicines you must first of all see a doctor or dermatologist.

Other – Light therapy, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, and pulse light treatments are available acne treatments at the moment, but new developments are happening all the time as technology improves, so the next, new technique may not be far away. The majority of these kinds of acne treatments are normally only available through a doctor, dermatologist, or other skin specialist.

Stay clean, stay clear

If you can keep your skin clean and bacteria-free you are giving yourself every chance of beating acne.Bacteria are the single most important cause of acne. Keep that under control and your acne will also be easier to control.

Keeping your skin clean, however, does not mean you need to scrub it or rub it heavily. In fact by scrubbing harder you are very likely to irritate your skin. This is an ideal environment for bacteria and more bacteria means more acne lesions. You can give your skin the best possible chance of improving by gently washing it no more than twice a day.

Medical companies are in business to sell their products, so they will claim they have the solution to your acne problems, however many of their products will contain the same or very similar ingredients to their rivals comparable product.A sign of a very good acne treatment is one which allows you to thoroughly clean your face without causing irritation or difficult side effects like, dryness, flaking or itching.

Always be ready to change to a different product if you are experiencing unpleasant side effects with the one you are using. It is important to remember that whatever products you choose to, it will take them time to work.  Try to stick with a product for at least a few weeks or so to give it time to work; if, after that time, you are not getting the results you want then move on to something else.
