Cystic acne is one of the most painful types of acne because it is formed of cysts that develop under the skin rather than on the surface of it like in regular acne break outs.  Like other acne, cystic acne is caused by the bacteria and dirt that gets clogged in skin pores and develops into pimples, which are pus filled pustules on the skin.  The main treatment for cystic acne is to keep the skin clean at all times so that the pustules do not form in the first place due to the bacteria and dirt on the skin.

Many times cystic acne will break out when there are hormonal changes going on in the person’s body, such as during puberty, during menstrual cycles or after pregnancy.  Cystic acne can be a problem for males or females, although females have more hormonal changes than males through the years so are more prone to getting it.  Part of the reason that the pores may get clogged even with clean skin is because of the sebaceous glands, which are the glands that secrete oil.  For those who are prone to cystic acne, these glands tend to over-produce the oil which ends up clogging the pores of the skin and resulting in acne.

When the oil of these glands gets mixed with dirt and bacteria that is when the cystic acne forms and results in a break out.  Women are warned not to wear make-up during a break out because it makes the skin dirtier and more prone to bacteria which further aggravate the problem.  This is difficult for women because the tendency is the cover up the problem areas rather than leave them exposed for all to see.  However, it is extremely important to keep the skin clean during a break out so that the pustules can heal more efficiently.

In addition to keeping the skin clean, it is important for individuals to not squeeze or scratch the cystic acne since this will result in permanent scarring which is difficult and expensive to remove.  Cystic acne can result in the darker scars since there is often a build up of blood and pus in the cysts so that when they are aggravated by picking or squeezing they result in a dark and deep scar.  Sometimes it is difficult for the individual to try not to scratch the acne because the pustules can often become itchy, which is further aggravated if the person has any type of skin allergies.
